EP. 90- Hunger Hormones, Appetite & Weight loss: The effects of sugar on Ghrelin, Leptin, Insulin.

Welcome to The Last Ten Podcast. Today we are going to talk about hunger hormones. The three hormones we will be talking about will be insulin, ghrelin and lepton. They are important because the way these hormones work together and ultimately have an effect on our body and how it relates to our brain.

The one hormone that is in charge of telling us when we are hungry is ghrelin. The hormone leptin is the hormone that tells us that we aren’t hungry anymore.

Insulin allows us to use sugar as energy. It is also responsible for storing and utilizing fat. It is a fat storage hormone. But it not a bad guy. We need insulin and it plays an important job. The problem is when we eat a meal full of refined carbohydrates, the pancreas then is prompted to secrete more insulin, more than is actually needed. The more refined sugars and flours you eat, the more your energy levels are going to fluctuate. Increased insulin equals increased hunger signals.

Ghrelin and Leptin are hormones that work to our benefit when we are eating a well-balanced diet and get enough sleep. They work against us when we are eating the processed, refined carbs and sugars. Insulin strongly influences ghrelin and leptin, which is why insulin is so incredibly important. The ghrelin hormone is trained or trainable.

Leptin is a hormone made by fat cells. Of the two hormones, ghrelin and leptin, leptin is the appetite suppressor. Leptin is in charge of letting your body know you have had enough, that you are satiated. Our body was not built to consume processed carbohydrates or sugars. It’s not something to fear. It’s okay here and there but regular consumption is not recommended.
