The Perfectionist Paradox
Okay Visionary, I know youâve heard the saying âprogress is more important than perfectionâ, but how often do you really let that concept sink in?
Donât get me wrong, I love a passionate Queen, but this pursuit for perfection can sometimes lead to an "all-or-nothing" mindset where you *mistakenly* believe that anything less than perfect is failure. You hold yourself to incredibly high standards and expect nothing but perfection from yourself. However, this particular combination, can lead to feelings of inadequacy and self-doubt when things don't go as planned. You may find yourself caught in a cycle of perfectionism, where any deviation from your ideal vision results in self-sabotage and emotional eating.
This perfectionist mindset leads to self-sabotage patterns, because it has you give up on your goals (but only temporarily) at the slightest deviation from your plan. The emotional intensity attached to âachieving perfectionâ feeds a cycle of sabotage, guilt, shame, and frustration, perpetuating your struggle with weight loss.
Learning to switch off âperfect robot modeâ and instead allow yourself to have forward movement as part of a very human journey (filled with highs and lows) will be essential in achieving lasting success.
Setting unrealistic expectations for yourself and your progress - so the moment you âmess upâ, it turns into an EFF IT rampage.
Feeling discouraged, flawed, ashamed, or defeated when you don't meet your own standards, and then often throwing in the towel, and eating your way back to âsquare oneâ.
Using food as a way to cope with stress and anxiety when you perceive yourself as âfailingâ and falling short.
Engaging in self-sabotaging behaviors when you perceive imperfections in your actions or results.
It will be REQUIRED to cultivate self-compassion.
Youâll need to shift your focus from perfection to progress and celebrate your achievements, no matter how small. I promise you: strategically celebrating yourself - as you create change - will be worlds more effective than being critical of yourself, in your weight loss journey and every other area of your life (and btw, itâs also just kinder!).
Youâll need to be able to recognize and challenge the perfectionist thought patterns that lead to self-sabotaging loops (aka âeff itâ eating!).
Remember that your worth is not determined by your accomplishments or perceived flawsâyou are inherently valuable just as you are, and while that might not feel so easy to accept right at this moment, when you give yourself a little grace, I promise you will start to see it too. When you stop entangling your worth as a human with how you eat and/or what you weigh - youâll grant yourself FREEDOM from the self-sabotaging cycle.
Itâs also important to acknowledge how societal pressures and gender norms have shaped your beliefs about food and weight loss. As a woman, you may have internalized messages about the importance of perfection and adhering to strict standards, but real life doesnât come with an instagram filter. As a result weâre often met with feelings of inadequacy, guilt or shame when unable to meet these expectations, triggering self-sabotaging patterns and behaviors.
To break free from these patterns, youâll need to adopt an empowering and holistic approach that honors YOU and your body as trustworthy and wise â particularly with food decisions in your day-to-day (vs âperfectionâ as your required metric for achieving âthe goalâ). This is how youâll finally pave the way for sustainable change and lasting success.
In order to stop staying stuck with the same eating patterns that have sabotaged your results until now, youâll need to:
Have new & improved ways to manage feelings of failure/inadequacy.
Have new & improved ways to cope with the intense emotions that come up when you have such a CLEAR vision of your future, but youâre not there quite yet (emotions like: impatience, frustration, disappointment, etc).
Break Patterns of Perfectionism/Perfectionistic Thinking and sabotage cycles at their core (meaning, deconditioning even the oldest habits and even retraining your nervous system). đ
